10 Awesome WCW Moments You Forgot

3. Perry Saturn Leaves The Flock

The Flock was all sorts of hit and miss. For every Kidman there was a Reese, for every Riggs a Hammer. The idea of a group of psychologically damaged outcasts being led by the King of Apathy is always going to be an intriguing one in a pro wrestling sense, but cerebral storytelling has never been this industry's strength.

For a fleeting moment, WCW got its soldiers in a row and knocked it out of the park. Saturn was always the most credible member of Raven's group and was presented as such, the enforcer of the faction, the Arn to Raven's Flair (if you'll allow the comparison). Saturn wasn't a free man from the start but he did seem to be less enthralled by the leader, the member most likely to eventually stand up for himself and leave the group.

Which is what Saturn eventually did, taking the rest of the faction with him. Perry began to experience more and more success, gaining confidence and growing tired of Raven's nonsense. It all built to a match between the two at Fall Brawl 1998, where Saturn defeated Raven (thanks in part to Kidman) and freed the members of The Flock. The crowd was all sorts of into the storyline, and the dynamic ending seemed to have justified the occasional drudgery of the previous year.

Less than a year later, Saturn and Raven were reunited. WCW gonna WCW.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
