10 Awful WCW Gimmicks That Immediately Died
2. Arachnaman
Not for the first time, Brad Armstrong drew the short straw in 1991 when WCW chiefs forced him to him wear a full-length lyrca body-suit and be introduced to the crowd by the name - wait for it - Arachnaman.
Detailed origin stories aren't really wrestling's strong suit, but if we were to guess, he probably started wearing his new costume after exposure to radioactive spider blood.
If you think that sounds like a potential copyright issue, then you'd be right. Armstrong was forced to drop the character shortly after its introduction when Marvel Comics, having noticed some parallels with a certain, well-known member of its superhero stable, reportedly started threatening legal action.
Needless to say, this whole stunt - while it lasted - was aimed squarely at getting children to part with their hard-earned pocket money, but honestly, look at that thing. What self-respecting kid would want to play with the Arachnaman action figure?
