10 Basic Qualities All WWE Heels Should Possess

1. Worthy Of The Payoff

Good heels make fans want to pay money to see them get beat. Regardless of how it's achieved, fans should want to witness the heel get their comeuppance and be willing to pay to see it. It's the fundamental reason for consuming the product and, when done right, is one of the main ways to generate revenue. The payoff to any good story is what the audience waits for. Over the years, the main event feuds in WWE would often culminate in a Steel Cage Match, Hell In A Cell Match, Last Man Standing Match or the ultimate Career-Ending Match. Some of the greatest feuds ever seen have centered around the babyface getting their retribution against the heel. Flair and Dusty, Savage and Roberts, and Austin and McMahon are all just a few examples of some incredibly successful rivalries that benefited from the payoff of the good guy finally getting even with the bad guy. It's the foundation that the entire genre is built upon and if the audience doesn't care to see a character prevail or perish, the promotion isn't doing its job. This isn't to say that babyface vs. babyface matches don't work because some of them have been among the biggest matches ever, but even with good guy vs. good guy, fans will eventually choose a side. Heels just make it quicker and easier to choose a side. While the qualities and actions that get booed today may have changed from years gone by, the role of the heel remains as vital as ever and no quality is more important than attracting fans that will to pay to see them lose.
