Sami Zayn is hilarious, has had some fantastic matches with guys like Neville, Kevin Owens, and others. Zayn has been a reliable member of every company and brand he’s been a part of. He has also proven in the past he has what it takes to lead a brand (see his time in NXT for reference).

Why won’t Sami Zayn ever be “The Guy?” Because WWE clearly doesn’t see him as anything close.

During his run with WWE Zayn enjoyed success in NXT which elevated him to the NXT Title, and made him a fan favorite. When Zayn was initially called up to the main roster he even carried this momentum from NXT to the RAW brand. Over the years Zayn has proven his worth as he’s succeeded in various roles as both a face and heel. Added to this, Zayn has already seen title success on the Smackdown brand where he has won the Intercontinental Championship three times. Despite all of this, Zayn has currently found himself stuck in the role of comedy heel.

Why WWE will never give Sami Zayn the main roster push he deserves is truly anyone's guess, but given his most notable feud from the past year was with Jackasses’ Johnny Knoxville, it seems Zayn is pretty far down the line of World Title contenders.

Unfortunately, Sami Zayn is also getting older, and per the reasons listed above WWE doesn't seem to view him as anywhere close to "The Guy." Doesn't help he recently signed a new long term deal. It’s safe to say he will finish his career in WWE and won’t even see a World Title match anytime soon.
