Stone Cold Steve Austin versus Brock Lesnar is a WWE dream match millions of fans crave to see but unfortunately never will get to.

Of course, we almost got the match in June 2002, but the Texas Rattlesnake decided to 'take his ball and go home' rather than do a clean job for the rookie on Raw. Austin was right to refuse to do the job. He knew there was money to be made in Austin/Lesnar down the line, when Brock had been built up more.

By the time Austin returned to the WWE's ranks it was clear that his in-ring career was almost at an end and, wouldn't you know it, a month after coming back he had his last ever match (against The Rock at WrestleMania XIX). The chance to do Lesnar/Austin had passed but the two would cross paths a little later on.

Austin, as 'Sheriff' of Raw (whatever that was), got himself involved in the tension brewing between Raw's Goldberg and Lesnar, then competing on Smackdown by egging on Da Man and encouraging him to pursue The Next Big Thing. The inter-brand rivalry picked up in a big way on the February 23, 2004 Raw when Lesnar shocking turned up at the end of a Mr McMahon versus Eric Bischoff main event and nailed Stone Cold (on referee duty) with an F5.

It was but a small sample of what Austin versus Lesnar might have looked like but it certainly captivated the live crowd and served as a great surprise ending to the show.
