Lesnar spent his first couple months on WWE TV feuding with The Hardys and scoring wins over the likes of Booker T, Bubba Ray Dudley and, er, Shawn Stasiak. He looked dominant in these midcard tussles and it wasn't long before he was elevated to the main events via a feud with a man who had dubbed himself 'Mr. Monday Night' - Rob Van Dam.

The night after Lesnar won the 2002 King of the Ring tournament (by beating RVD in the final), the two collided in a Raw main event with Van Dam's Intercontinental Title on the line. The week before, Lesnar had technically been in the last match of the show, but the episode closed with a Vince McMahon Main Event Promo. This time, he and RVD were on dead last. A big deal for the rookie and a big test, too.

The match itself was pretty good and certainly an improvement over their outing the night before. After ten minutes of solid action, Heyman sensed his client was in a spot of danger and ran in for the DQ, a weak finish if there ever was one. There was nothing weak about the post-match, though, with Lesnar drilling Van Dam through the announce table with a spine-jarring powerbomb.

Raw went off the air that night with a dominant Lesnar standing tall and it was clear that WWE had big things in store for the muscle-bound monster. It wasn't exactly being referred to as the 'new era' back then, but it sure felt like it.
