The Royal Rumble is arguably the second ranking pay per view that WWE puts on, which means its first edition must have made some impact. Of course, there is no other match like it in wrestling while it is guaranteed to happen just once a year, which makes it all the more special. The first Royal Rumble event was all killer and no filler, which was one of the things this year's event should have been. The first match of the night saw Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat defeat Rick Rude in a classic wrestling encounter. Then, in a match that is completely alien to today's WWE Universe, The Jumping Bomb Angels defeated The Glamour Girls in a two out of three falls match for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships. Could you imagine the majority of today's Divas putting on that sort of a match? No, me neither. The Islanders defeated The Young Stallions in the remaining match of the evening in another two out of three falls match. The main event of the evening was undoubtedly the Royal Rumble match itself. 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan won the first Rumble, which only had 20 competitors in it. Duggan was joined in the final four by Don Muraco, Dino Bravo and One Man Gang. Frenchy Martin came out to distract Muraco which enabled Bravo and the One Man Gang to eliminate him. They then went to do the same on Duggan, however, when OMG went to attack Duggan, Hacksaw ducked and the big man accidentally eliminated Bravo. Duggan would soon eliminate One Man Gang to win the match.
