Eight matches took place on Backlash's debut back in 1999, with each of them proving to be better than the last. Backlash started as a one off special as part of the In Your House series. A year later, it was rebranded as its own pay per view and held every year. It was made an exclusive Raw PPV before ending in 2009 and being replaced by Extreme Rules. After no less than four matches were held on Sunday Night Heat, The Ministry of Darkness' Bradshaw, Faarooq, and Mideon defeated Edge, Christian and Gangrel, Al Snow defeated Hardcore Holly for the WWF Hardcore Championship, The Godfather defeated Goldust for the WWF Intercontinental Championship, The New Age Outlaws defeated Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett to determine the number one contenders to the WWF Tag Team Championships, Mankind defeated Big Show in a Boiler Room Brawl, Triple H defeated X-Pac, The Undertaker defeated Ken Shamrock before Stone Cold Steve Austin retained the WWF Championship against The Rock with Shane McMahon as the Special Guest referee. The Rock/Austin match was an all time classic and was a fitting end to memorable debut edition of a pay per view. The twists and turns the match took and the controversial ending involving McMahon senior made it one for the ages. As cards go, you will be hard pressed to find one with as much variety as that.
