10 Best Lucha Underground Moments

5. Cueto’s Confession

Dario Cueto
El Rey Network

One of the things that Lucha Underground does so unbelievably well is placing small details into their scenes that will eventually be explained and paid off. While common in movies and scripted TV shows, this is actually a very surprising thing in the wrestling business.

Dario Cueto had a small statue of a red bull on his desk throughout the first season. The camera would often linger on it throughout scenes involving other wrestlers in his office. We knew that it had to have meant something, but had no idea what. In the fifth episode of season two, we found out.

As Dario explained, he was beaten by his mother, and he always simply took it, until one day he told her “no mas.” That was enough for her to go on a rampage, and possibly beat him to death. That is until his protective brother Matanza stepped in, and then brutally murdered her...with the bull statute.

It’s a symbol of Dario's love of violence, and a reminder of everything he’s been through. The acting in the scene is among the best ever seen on a wrestling program, and light years away of the over-the-top style of WWE and TNA. The man an Emmy statue for that performance!

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
