10 Best Lucha Underground Moments

6. Grave Consequences

Casket matches are usually a lackluster affair. They’re often slow, plodding and a bit silly. Somehow, Lucha Underground turned a casket match into one of the year’s best matches.

In Grave Consequences, the man who doesn’t fear death in Mil Muertes battled the man who can’t die in Fenix. It was an incredibly bloody, borderline psychotic showdown. Immediately from the ring intros we knew we were in for something unique. The pallbearers, made up in Day of the Dead clothes and makeup, walked stoically to the ring, carrying the empty casket that would soon be filled with the remains of one of the competitors. It was a great visual.

When the match started, the action quickly spilled out of the ring, and the entire Temple became a warzone. Fenix gave it his best efforts to dethrone Muertes, but it seemed an impossible task.

The King of Death was out to end his arch-rival's career, and possibly his life in the bout, and greatly disrespected him as he tore apart his mask with his bare hands. Fenix , though, proved he was stronger than death and finished off Muertes with a great looking tightrope walk into a double stomp into his opponent's back, blasting him into the casket. The pallbearers then once again emerged to carry Muertes off into the unknown.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
