CM Punk ended his lengthy WWE Championship reign after losing to The Rock at the previous Pay-Per-View, the Royal Rumble. Rock was on a path towards defending his belt at WrestleMania against the Rumble winner, John Cena, but would need to tango with Punk once more at Elimination Chamber.

This match really found its second gear when Punk Rock Bottomed his foe onto the Spanish Announce Table. Since one of the stipulations of the match stated that Rock could lose his title due to a countout loss, his struggle back to the ring before the count of 10 was highly dramatic.

Punk could have had the match won after he hit his GTS onto Rock in the middle of the ring at one point if a conscious ref was nearby. The fans counted well beyond three but it was no use because referee Mike Chioda was taken out by a bump on the outside apron a few moments prior.

Lots and lots of wackiness fueled the ending. Many refs tried to be useful and Paul Heyman took a championship belt to the back of the head. Punk looked fairly strong as he kicked out of several of Rock's finishers but finally succumbed to a Rock Bottom after 21 minutes.
