WrestleMania III is considered to be one of the most important shows in WWE history. While the first WrestleMania was the big gamble which paid off, it was the third edition that placed WWE front and centre of the then zeitgeist and pop culture. It was attended by (an alleged) 93,000 people for crying out loud. Even taking into account WWE’s massaged figures, the attendance was still incredible.

As for the card, it lived up to the hype and one of main reasons was the Intercontinental Title all-time classic between these two greats.

It was everything you would expect from these in-ring magicians. They kept on out-wrestling each other at every point, with the tension and drama continuing to build. The audience was left intrigued as to how this seemingly equal contest of strength and skill would be resolved. Finally Steamboat latched onto an opening and trapped Savage in a Small Package for the win.

Hailed by critics and fans alike, it was one of the highlights of WWE’s early history as a major commercial powerhouse. And it will always remain so.
