10 Best Tag-Team Matches In WrestleMania History
The second ever TLC match rocked the Reliant Astrodome...
Way back in the 1980's, tag-team wrestling was a vital part of the then-World Wrestling Federation's product. There's just something so simplistic about good tag wrestling, but such directness really doesn't detract from the excitement tandem matches can provide.
Despite the fact that tag team wrestling has had its importance diminished by WWE management in recent times, wrestling fans have a great fondness for doubles bouts. Apparently, those in charge of the company don't feel tag wrestling is quite as interesting as it once was, because there's been a real lack of emphasis on the style in the modern era.
Arguably the last truly great period for tag wrestling in WWE fell when Los Guerreros were tearing it up in matches against the likes of Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio, Edge, Rhyno and Team Angle on Smackdown in 2002-2003.
Since then, things haven't been the same, although there are high hopes that The New Day can help provide a main card WWE Tag-Team Title match at WrestleMania equal to some past greats.
Remarkably, a tag-team match fell in the main event slot of the first ever WrestleMania. That has never happened again, but that fact doesn't mean 'Mania hasn't been witness to some tremendous multi-man matches.
This article outlines some of the best in history.
10. Hulk Hogan & Mr. T Vs. Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff ('Mania I)
More so than any other tag match featured on this list, the WrestleMania I main event is here because of historic value. It's difficult to sell a wrestling match featuring an actor to some, but Mr. T entered a decent performance that actually, somewhat amazingly, didn't detract from the quality of the bout.
'Rowdy' Roddy Piper was at his arrogant best as the chief antagonist, ably backed by 'Mr. Wonderful' Paul Orndorff as his tag-team partner in crime. Hulk Hogan was simply riding the crest of a wave he helped create, deservedly headlining what was then the WWF's biggest ever show.
Fans went wild for Hulk in 1985, and they hated Piper just as much as they adored Hogan. Perhaps a singles match between the two men would have been the better choice, but Vince McMahon wanted to mix celebrity with wrestling, which is why Mr. T was involved.
The results were...interesting. There are undoubtedly better matches from an in-ring perspective, but it'd feel like dodging the proverbial elephant in the room by not including this one here. It was such an important match and meant so much to the success of the show.
It's one of the biggest tag matches in 'Mania history.
