The August 4, 1997 episode of Monday Nitro will always be cherished by those who remember WCW fondly. Over the years, the company relinquished pay-per-view dollars in favour of popping a television rating for Nitro. This was one of those occasions; Lex Luger beat the evil nWo figurehead Hollywood Hogan to win the World Title.

WCW could easily have held this match back for the upcoming Road Wild pay-per-view on August 9. There, Hogan won the title back from Luger. Watched in isolation, though, the Nitro bout still has an electricity about it. Fans were desperate to see Hogan taken down a peg or two by a top WCW name.

Lex delivered on his promise to make the nWo chief submit, hoisting Hogan up and into the Torture Rack. Fans were so enthused by what they'd witnessed that a wild party started as soon as Luger had won.

It's true that WCW relied on the nWo concept for too long. Regardless, this moment was proof that the heel group could be highly effective in making a strong babyface look even better.
