In similar fashion to Booker T, Diamond Dallas Page managed to overcome politics and management's narrow focus on the New World Order to become a babyface success story. Starting as an in-ring worker relatively late, Page also had to deal with the fact he wasn't an emerging up-and-comer, at least not in terms of age.

With stars like Hogan and Savage on top, DDP being in his 40s wasn't a big issue to WCW. Still, when Page won the WCW World Title at Spring Stampede 1999 it did come as something of a surprise. Working a Four Corners Match against Ric Flair, Hollywood Hogan and Sting, DDP eventually pinned Flair to bag the belt.

Holding the title high above his head before disappearing back behind the curtain, Page looked utterly thrilled to be champion. That resonated with the audience; they were only too happy to embrace DDP as WCW's top champ.

Page represented something different for hardcore WCW fans. He had organically risen up the card instead of being shoved down people's throats.
