There's a case to be made that Lex Luger's debut should have taken this slot. Although impressive, Luger's WCW comeback coincided with something else that the company could shout about. On September 4, 1995, WCW introduced Monday Nitro, a show that would compete head-to-head with WWF Monday Night Raw each week.

Opening with a fresh-feeling Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Brian Pillman bout, the broadcast also had a unique location. Held in the Mall Of America, Nitro came across as something different to what Vince McMahon was feeding wrestling fans every Monday.

By the time matches like Ric Flair vs. Sting and Hulk Hogan vs. Big Bubba Rogers happened, it was clear WCW were onto something with Nitro. Having Luger jump ship from the WWF and debut on the show also legitimised what the company was trying to achieve - national dominance - and made Nitro look special right from the off.

For longtime WCW fans, it must have been magical to take on the might of the WWF. A calculated risk by Eric Bischoff quickly started to pay off. Nitro's debut kickstarted the 'Monday Night Wars'.
