10 Best Wrestling Match Concepts Since 2000

6. Ultimate X

TNA/Impact Wrestling’s had some lousy gimmick matches in its day. But this was its absolute best. It was creative and perfectly and excitedly exhibited their X Division to audiences.

Ultimate X is held between three of more wrestlers. Two cables are connected to metal structures in four corners of the ring and cross 15 feet above the middle of the ring. Just like a ladder match, a championship title or a large X is suspended above the ring. First person to scale the cables and grab the title/X wins.

Its first appearance was on August 20, 2003 in the TNA weekly Wednesday pay per view days when Michael Shane defeated Chris Sabin and Frankie Kazarian for the TNA X Division Championship. Chris Sabin’s talked about how unsafe the first one was: “Basically when the match happened, that was the first time we were climbing on that thing so we were just kind of hoping that this thing stays together!”

It was an innovative and thrilling concept that helped put TNA on the map, especially in modern classics like A.J. Styles defeating Petey Williams and Chris Sabin at Final Resolution and Christopher Daniels winning against Samoa Joe and A.J. Styles at Destination X.
