10 Best Wrestling Stables Of All Time
5. D-Generation X
Some legendary stables arrive with a bang, infiltrating a promotion in one fell swoop or forming as a result of a dramatic turn. Others just sort of meld together without too much fanfare. D-Generation X fell into the latter camp, as the newly-turned heel Shawn Michaels and the hated snob Triple H began palling around on TV more and more frequently. Soon, they (and HHH's bodyguard, Chyna) formed an official faction whose sole purpose seemed to be to push the envelope in WWE's newly-born Attitude Era with suggestive promos and antics.
The group was borne out of the two men's real-life friendship, and despite the fact that they were heels, fans enjoyed the fact that their partnership (and references to close friends and WCW stars Scott Hall and Kevin Nash) broke the all-important wall of wrestling kayfabe. After Michaels lost the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XIV and took a leave of absence, HHH took over the group, added X-Pac and The New Age Outlaws, and made them full-fledged babyfaces (and merchandising juggernauts).
DX was sacrificed in order to get Triple H over as a singles heel, but years later, "The Game" and a returned Michaels reunited under the D-Generation X name. Their reunions (one in 2006 and another in 2009) exposed new fans to the unit, got nostalgia pops from the old ones, and sold a lot more t-shirts.
Today, D-Generation X is actually given more historical credit by WWE than it deserves (three guesses as to why). The group is often credited in official company lore with winning the Monday Night Wars and putting WCW out of business. Fans who watched wrestling during that era know that version of events isn't accurate, but at the same time, the group's impact is undeniable.
