It would take some of the absolute best matches of all time to outdo the Shawn Michaels-Undertaker trilogy, but that's exactly what Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat delivered in 1989. Both men were already among the best in the sport before their feud, but this series of matches made them legends for all time.

Steamboat returned to WCW in early 1989 and immediately established himself as number one contender to the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. At February's Chi-Town Rumble, the two had an amazing contest that saw Steamboat finally become a world champion when he reversed the Figure Four into a small package.

A rematch took place at Clash of the Champions VI, with Steamboat and Flair meeting in a two-out-of-three falls match. Flair picked up the first pinfall, but Steamboat evened the score with a double chickenwing hold, forcing Flair to submit for the first time ever. The two continued to battle and, at the 55-minute mark, Steamboat locked in the double chickenwing again. Flair fell on top of Steamboat and both men's shoulders were down, but Steamboat lifted one before the three count. He was declared the winner, but when referees noticed that Flair's foot was under the rope, one more match was needed.

The final bout took place at WrestleWar '89, and the result was a bout that many call the best of all time. Flair worked Steamboat's leg over, injuring the champion, but "The Dragon" kept fighting hard. The action was incredible, but when Steamboat tried to lift Flair for a slam, his leg gave out. That allowed Flair to roll Steamboat up, regain the World Heavyweight Championship, and finish the greatest trilogy of all time.
