When it comes to starting a title reign, you couldn't ask for much better than a clean victory over the most dominant performer of the age.

The Ultimate Warrior was given this honour when he pinned Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI, adding the WWE Championship to his Intercontinental strap. This was a real passing of the torch moment, a chance for the company to move away from their dependency on The Hulkster and build a new star who could lead them into the future.

Or that's what it should have been...

Warrior might not have lived up to the red and yellow's standards, but he still made a damn good fist of being champion. He reignited his rivalry with Rick Rude at SummerSlam and put in a great showing at Survivor Series, before losing the title in somewhat disappointing fashion to Sgt. Slaughter at the 1991 Royal Rumble.

Regardless of how his run might have ended, there's no getting over just how massive Warrior's initial win was and how excited fans were to see a new face at the top of the totem pole.

Even if that excitement failed to last.
