3. Mankind vs. Shawn Michaels (September 22, 1996)
By his own admission, Shawn Michaels was feeling the heat as the reigning WWF Heavyweight Champion in 1996. Capturing the belt back at WrestleMania XII from Bret Hart, Michaels was creaking under the weight of expectation as early as the Summer months. A feud against Vader had felt a tad awkward, but Mick Foley helped give HBK some of his old confidence back. In Your House 10: Mind Games ended in stirring fashion. With Michaels as champion, fans had only really watched him defend against The British Bulldog, Vader and Diesel. None of those matches had been a complete disaster, but Michaels was still waiting for that validating performance he could point to and glean satisfaction from. Against Foley's Mankind character, he got exactly that. Mankind bumped around like crazy for Michaels, who seemed to be enjoying working against someone with such an unorthodox style. The harsh nature of the Mankind persona forced Shawn to show a little more fight than normal, and that went over very well with the fans. To this day, this bout remains one of Mick Foley's personal favourites. It's not hard to see why.
