10 Best WWE Matches That Happened Outside America
5. Bret Hart Vs British Bulldog - Summerslam 92
As the 30th anniversary of the first major WWF pay-per-view to emanate from outside the United States or Canada approaches, this is one match that gains even more significance in 2022. SummerSlam 1992 was a landmark event.
For the first time, WWF decided that its U.K. audience was going to get more than just the regular house show loop. Teaming with legendary promoter Harvey Goldsmith, and riding the wave of popularity the Federation was gaining from its exposure on the rapidly growing Sky network - Vince McMahon took the biggest party of the summer on vacation and built its main event around two of the biggest stars on the roster.
On this rare occasion, the main event of SummerSlam 92 was not for the world heavyweight championship. Whereas the title was defended on the card as Macho Man Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior faced off, it was a battle for the Intercontinental Championship that headlined the show as Bret Hart defended against the hometown hero, The British Bulldog.
Davey Boy Smith was without a doubt at the height of his popularity - especially in the UK and Vince knew that this family feud would provide the extra hook to sell this match. Ahead of his ascent to winning his first WWF Championship, Bret faced off against his brother-in-law in a match that he still regards as one of his best to date. Accompanied to the ring by Commonwealth boxing champion Lennox Lewis, the British Bulldog had the reportedly near-90,000 crowd in the palm of his hand as he defeated Hart to win his only Intercontinental Championship. Even 30 years down the line, this match is still regarded as one of WWF’s most memorable moments.
