Not all of WWE's attempts in the late 1990s to blur the lines between sports entertainment and MMA were successful. Case in point: virtually every single second of the Brawl For All Tournament won by Bart Gunn.

Having said that, some of it ended up producing compelling TV, not least of all the nine-minute Lion's Den match - that's essentially a UFC style dog pen - contested by renowned badass Ken Shamrock and wrestler's wrestler Owen Hart at SummerSlam 1998.

The key here was that they knew where the draw the boundaries. It wasn't quite a real fight in the sense of the wrestlers involved actually trying to beat each other up, but it borrowed heavily from legitimate combat disciplines, making it feel more authentic than your standard WWE fare.

For this, huge props have to go out to Owen, a wrestling chameleon who could turn his hand to just about anything in the squared circle, and one who was selfless enough to come out on the losing side time after time again.
