In pro wrestling, compelling stories are just as important as in-ring action, and just as vital in the creation of a good show. No Mercy 2007, one of the most unusual WWE PPVs of all time, showed just how valuable drama can be.

The main event of the show was slated to be John Cena defending the WWE Championship against Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing match, but on the go-home Raw, Cena suffered a torn pectoral muscle. The title was vacated, with Vince McMahon promising a new champion at No Mercy.

When the PPV opened, McMahon and Raw General Manager William Regal announced that due to Randy Orton's status as number one contender, he was officially named the new WWE Champion. An angry Triple H came out to confront "The Viper", leading to an impromptu title match between the two men. Only 15 minutes after becoming the champion, Orton lost the title to "The Game".

Triple H, meanwhile, was supposed to take on Umaga, so McMahon said that the match was still on - with the title on the line. Triple H scored a quick win with the Pedigree, but his evening wasn't over yet. McMahon informed him that Orton was invoking his rematch clause, and they'd clash in the main event... in a Last Man Standing match.

That bout was an excellent contest, potentially the best singles match of Orton's career. They brawled around the ring and pulled out all the stops, but ultimately, Orton was victorious - when HHH tried to Pedigree him on the announcers' table, Orton reversed it into an RKO. "The Game" was put down for the count, and Orton was WWE Champion again.
