That same casual interest was peaked when reports trickled out that hardcore internet fave Daniel Bryan had been fired for choking WWE's ring announcer with his tie.

Bryan's controversial act came amidst carnage. A group of developmental hopefuls, led by loudmouth Wade Barrett, banded together in an act of defiance and a show of solidarity against the status quo. They called themselves the 'Nexus', and they were keen to demolish WWE's established star hierarchy piece by bloody piece.

In early-June, the group, comprised of Barrett, Bryan, Skip Sheffield, Heath Slater, Darren Young, David Otunga, Michael Tarver and Justin Gabriel, brutally assaulted John Cena, referees, announcers and other WWE staff to send their message. Then, Raw went dead without any further context to their invasion.

Although the Nexus story would ultimately be ruined by shoddy booking, it did start off red hot. Fans took the fledgling octet very seriously because of their cliffhanger debut.
