10 Best WWE Title Matches In SummerSlam History

1. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart in a Steel Cage Match (1994)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5-jbydirbo When looking back on WrestleMania 10, many fans recall Bret Hart winning the WWE Championship back from Yokozuna, one year removed from losing it. However, it was at that same event earlier on in the night that Bret went one-on-one with his brother Owen in one of the most technically proficient matches in 'Mania history. It often goes unnoticed by fans due to its place on the card, but make no mistake about it: it was a great match that matched its equally excellent build. Although he lost that match against his own flesh and blood to kick off the show, Bret would end the show as champion. Logically, this made Owen Hart the de facto No. 1 contender to the title after pinning the current champion on the grand stage of WrestleMania. Their second encounter would be no ordinary rematch, however. It was going to be held under Steel Cage match rules. This was at a time when the Steel Cage still meant something, serving as the be all, end all to the most ruthless rivalries in all of WWE. This feud was definitely in need of that stipulation, especially with the WWE title up for grabs this time around. Nevertheless, this was a fantastic matchup with a very well constructed finish. As Bret and Owen are both on the verge of escaping the cage, you can see the suspense on the face of the fans in the audience. Bret ultimately emerged the victor, but it wasn't long after that Owen called the services of Bret's brother-in-law Jim €œThe Anvil€ Neidhart, assisting Owen in ambushing Bret. A returning Davey Boy Smith made the save. Not only is this match the greatest championship contest in the history of SummerSlam, it can also be considered one of the best Steel Cage matches of all-time as well. What makes this match even more astonishing is the fact they were able to exceed expectations and outperform the match they had at WrestleMania. Both Bret and Owen had five star performances in this contest and showed that they're not only the best of brothers, but they can be the best of rivals as well. Despite all that, the match didn't even close out the 1994 SummerSlam pay-per-view. The Undertaker vs. fake impersonator served as the main event for some strange reason, ending the event on a sour note. That aside, real wrestling fans know that this championship contest was the true main event of this show. Trying topping that one, John and Brock.
