The reign with which Vince McMahon monopolised the pro wrestling industry, Hulk Hogan's first created a monolith and made himself, and those lucky enough to wrestle him and under him, very, very rich. The midcard loved working on the same circuit as Hogan, knowing that his star power guaranteed a massive house across an inexorable loop.

Though Hogan wrestled his best two matches amid his second run with the gold, great wrestling matches were never the appeal. Hogan, histrionic as this may read to a younger audience, was a magician. The triumphant theme, the superhero theatrics, the ludicrous ability to position himself as an underdog despite his ludicrous physique: Hogan was perhaps the greatest manipulator in the history of the business. Even viewed through the lens of 2018, Hogan's mid-1980s schtick remains amazing. One body slam of André The Giant conceals how tedious the preceding 12 minutes of the WrestleMania III main event were. Those moments were immortal.

Longevity, memorable matches (the inflexible formula doubtlessly helped), massive drawing power: Hogan also found himself at the epicentre of the most protective and creative major title loss ever, having been conned out of it by Ted DiBiase.

"How much money did they spend on the plastic surgery, brother?!" Hogan literally cried in the aftermath. This was prime Hogan, striking a perfect balance between hysterical and believable that created a monster.
