Up until last week, it was widely assumed that The Undertaker would face John Cena at WrestleMania 33. The two icons have never faced each other at the Showcase of the Immortals, and with Taker reaching his career’s home stretch, it’s a match WWE will want to book sooner rather than later. It’s one of the last true WrestleMania “dream matches” they have left in the chamber, and whether it was for a championship or not, Taker vs. Cena would have drawn huge interest.

The rumours were shattered last week, however, and the match is no longer on the table. Furthermore, it’s also assumed that Taker won’t be challenging for a title at WrestleMania, won’t be facing Braun Strowman, and will instead face-off against another member of the Raw roster. With Triple H, Seth Rollins, Goldberg, Brock Lesnar all otherwise occupied, and Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens likely fighting for titles, this leaves little in the way of credible options.

The question of The Undertaker’s immediate future is one of the biggest things WWE must address as this year’s Rumble. His interactions in the Rumble itself will likely give an indication as to whom he’s facing at WrestleMania, and what WWE have in store for him over the coming months.

Taker is considered a heavy favourite heading into the match, and whoever eliminates him will have hell to pay. His presence in the match gives WWE a great opportunity to sow the seeds for WrestleMania 33, and what could be one of The Deadman’s final matches.
