10 Big Talking Points From WWE Fastlane 2017
2. Goldberg Wins The Universal Championship
It’s appropriate that arguably the biggest talking point of the night was provided by the biggest match on the card, when Goldberg defeated Kevin Owens to become the new Universal Champion. As is often the case, though, being a major talking point isn’t necessarily a good thing.
With Goldberg as champion, this not only means that a younger talent has been sacrificed for the sake of yet another WrestleMania nostalgia run, but it also means that this year's 'Mania main event—Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship—is starting to look worryingly predictable.
With Goldberg unlikely to be sticking around for the foreseeable future, and Lesnar contracted to a rather more long-term deal, all signs point to Lesnar beating Goldberg for the belt, meaning that this will be the second successive year we’ve entered WrestleMania with the main event looking like a foregone conclusion.
To play the devil’s advocate, given the reactions that Goldberg has been receiving since making his big return, it’s hard to argue that he doesn’t deserve another run as champion. But to be doing so at the biggest show of the year, and at the expense of someone 18 years his junior, makes this one a little more difficult to take.
