During the early 2000s, Edge was a very entertaining performer. That said, no one saw anything major in his future; in fact, it was widely accepted that despite his popularity, Edge would never reached anything beyond the mid-card scene, or that he’d be nothing more than a tag team wrestler for his entire career.

But beginning in 2002, Edge started improving by leaps and bounds. Thanks to the genius booking of Paul Heyman, Edge’s strengths were highlighted and his weaknesses concealed, which allowed him to shine on the blue brand. By 2004, he was already receiving World title shots, and was becoming an excellent speaker.

By 2005, he became a bona fide star, when he became the first MITB winner to cash-in his briefcase and win the WWE Championship.

Some people still thought that Edge wasn’t ready for the main event, but he proved them wrong. He was white hot as a heel, with or without Lita, cut engaging promos and put on great matches. Over time, his star power rose even further, and by the end of the 2000s, he was the face of SmackDown.

Few wrestlers can say that they’ve undergone such a dramatic transformation.

In 2001, Edge was a multi-time tag team champion; by the time he retired in 2011, he had become the single-most decorated wrestler in WWE history. When it comes to career transformations, it doesn’t get much better than that.
