When he first debuted as Rocky Maivia, Dwayne Johnson cut some of the most vanilla and uninteresting promos imaginable.

He was such a clean-cut babyface that fans hated him from the start. He has also claimed that he was nervous during those early years, and it showed in how he spoke. Had he kept going with that character direction, he would’ve bombed as a Superstar.

But Rocky was persistent, and he wanted to fulfil a dream. So he went the extra mile and took come communication classes. Not only did this improve his own self-confidence, but he learned proper tone change, pacing, facial expressions, and everything else needed to cut a legendary promo.

So when he returned, billed himself as The Rock, and started talking in the third person, the transformation was unbelievable. This generic babyface who couldn’t cut an engaging promo to save his life became the most entertaining speaker WWE had ever seen.

To this day, the Rock is praised as the best talker ever. His promos are legendary, his catchphrases have transcended into pop culture, and his charisma is unmatchable.

By making this transition at the right time, he was even able to become the most successful wrestler-turned-actor of all time, as his speaking ability and comfort in front of a camera cannot be matched by any other wrestler.
