10 Biggest Misplaced Complaints About WWE Today
9. The Commentators Suck
WWE’s commentary stinks. We’re now 15 years removed from Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler’s prime years, and where the announcers once existed to enhance the stories, sell the action, and put the wrestlers over, they’re now little more than company shills. They’re a constant distraction that regularly detract from the product rather than enhance it, and fans have every right to criticise the situation.
The bulk of the complaints are thrown in entirely the wrong direction, however. A large section of the fanbase believe that WWE’s lackluster commentary is the fault of the announcers, and while nobody on the company’s books can hold a candle to peak JR, this isn’t entirely true. WWE’s announcers are just puppets catering to the whims of a highly-demanding production team who dictate their every sentence during the show, and those are the people such complaints should be directed towards.
Michael Cole proved during that UK Title Tournament that he’s a fantastic play-by-play announcer when he doesn’t have Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn screaming through his earpiece the whole show. Him and his colleagues can be grating, but it’s important to remember that they’re only following orders, just like anyone else on the show.
