10 Biggest Moments In The History Of WWE Backlash
5. AJ Styles Wins WWE Title (2016)
AJ Styles had many incredible moments during his stellar 2016, but the most important could well have been his victory at Backlash 2016. Although hardly his best bout of the year (especially after a classic against Cena at Summerslam, and a pair of consecutive PPV main events with Roman Reigns) this match with Dean Ambrose saw Styles capture the WWE Championship.
For much of his career, Styles was seen as the anti-WWE Champion. A small, fast-paced indie guy who seemed entirely at odds with everything sports entertainment stood for, AJ travelled to Japan, developed his career immeasurably, and arrived to take WWE by storm.
This victory was validation on various levels, and a true statement of diversity by the company itself. If somebody as seemingly out of place as AJ Styles could win the WWE Championship, who couldn't?!(Of course it helps that Styles is really, really good.)
