10 Biggest Moments In The History Of WWE Backlash
6. Benoit Vs. Triple H Vs. Michaels (2004)
WrestleMania rematches at Backlash are often the source of discontent among wrestling fans, seen as an unimaginative piece of booking with the potential to render prior events pointless. However, sometimes these sequels deliver in just as big a way as the original bouts - and that was certainly the case in 2004.
WrestleMania XX saw one of the best finishes in the history of the event, as Chris Benoit overcame the odds to defeat Triple H and Shawn Michaels, winning the World Heavyweight Championship in the process.
It's obviously unnatural to view Benoit as a figure of mass support in this day and age, but the Canadian crowd were understandably hot for their hero at the time. The match featured one of the more effective nods to the Montreal Screwjob, as HBK slapped Benoit in the Sharpshooter while Earl Hebner ran out to play replacement referee. The heat was insane.
Eventually, with Triple H incapacitated on the outside, Benoit was able to retain his title with a far more positively received version of Bret Hart's finisher, putting the icing on the cake of a brilliant main event.
