10 Biggest Regrets From Triple H's WWE Career
8. The Summer Of Punk
In the latter half of 2011, there was no hotter story in wrestling than that of CM Punk. Reaching the end of his contract, the Second City Saint cut an all-time great promo on the state of WWE, vowed to leave the company with the WWE title, and successfully did so in his home town. If he was rushed back a little quickly, it did nothing to dent his heat; truly, this was the Summer Of Punk.
As such, Triple H just had to be involved. Then in one of his many stints as an authority figure, he inserted himself as guest referee in Punk and Cena’s SummerSlam showdown. His best pal Kevin Nash then made a shock return, powerbombing Punk and facilitating the loss of his title. Punk would challenge Nash to a match, but this would eventually turn into Punk vs Hunter, with the white hot babyface losing their single match (through dodgy means, but still).
There was simply no reason for Triple H to be a part of this story, let alone in such a central role. A great deal of TV time was given over to the mystery of whether or not Helmsley had invited Nash to attack Punk, time that the nuclear Punk could have put to much better use. It was a bizarre and ego-driven decision that makes up one of many points on Punk’s list of grievances.
