10 Biggest WCW Crowd Reactions Ever

1. Goldberg Becomes The Man

Every now and then in professional wrestling, the stars well and truly align. You would be hard pushed to find a more 'lightning in a bottle'-type run than Goldberg's initial months in WCW, months that saw him go unbeaten all the way to the WCW World Championship, via the US Championship and a whole heap of broken bodies.

On 6 July 6, 1998, Goldberg pinned 'Hollywood' Hulk Hogan to become the WCW World Heavyweight Champion. It didn't happen entirely cleanly, as DDP and Karl Malone caused something of a distraction, but that didn't matter. The crowd in Atlanta, Georgia, where Goldberg once played football, erupted, although they had been incredibly loud throughout the entire match.

Goldberg kicked out of two leg drops before hitting Hogan with a spear and a Jackhammer, pinning the champion to the insane delight of everyone in attendance. Sure, you could argue that having the title change hands on Nitro was booking madness, but having the title change hands full stop was the right move.

It was the biggest win of Goldberg's career, one of the most famous matches in Nitro history, and arguably the biggest crowd reaction in WCW history.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
