Going back to the time before the Monday Night Wars, wrestling crowds were still a fairly naive bunch. The results would get great reactions, regardless of how the men and women in the ring got there. One such example came in the main event of Starrcade '93, when 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair challenged then WCW World Champion Vader for the title, with Flair's career on the line.

Vader was unbeatable, unstoppable, yet The Alimony Pony managed to keep The Mastodon down for the 1-2-3. When he did so the crowd erupted, proof if proof need be that no matter how incredible Flair was as a heel, he was more than adept at getting major crowds behind him as a babyface. Of course, the fact that he won the match by grabbing Vader's leg and causing the big man to comically tumble over is best left forgotten, but the ends justified the means.

In 2017, if a world championship match ended in this sort of manner there would be a riot. Back in 1993 the live crowd made as much noise as a riot, with none of the violence.
