10 Biggest WWE Attitude Era Controversies

9. DX Invades WCW Monday Nitro

Throughout the entire 'Monday Night Wars', Vince McMahon and his merry band of creative team members liked to pretend that World Championship Wrestling were far from a successful company. Instead of acknowledging that problems were internal (fans latched onto the cool nWo concept, leaving the more cartoon-like, safe WWF in the dust), McMahon instead poked fun at 'Dubya C Dubya' routinely. By the time D-Generation X decided to 'invade' an episode of WCW Monday Nitro in late-April of 1998, the tide had already started to turn in the WWF's favour. Hot angles including the likes of Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon, and Austin's confrontation with Mike Tyson, had been extremely popular, and the WWF was suddenly hip and fresh once more. To show just how far each promotion was willing to go to undermine the other, the WWF even doctored pictures of a billboard advertising Nitro, altering the image so that it showed there were still seats available, when in reality the show was pretty darn close to being sold out. DX would never actually get inside the arena for Nitro, but this was a crucial (and controversial) PR exercise from the McMahon family.
