10 Biggest WWE Creative Mistakes Of 2020 (So Far)
7. Universal F**k-Up At WrestleMania 36
So after Grandad Bill slayed The Fiend at Super ShowDown in the most unwelcome result of 2020, it was clear that the 53-year-old would be going into WrestleMania as Universal Champion.
It was widely reported that Roman Reigns would be the man to challenge for the title, but were the creative team able to come up with an intriguing enough storyline to get the fans back onside for this feud?
Nope. Goldberg asked ‘Who’s Next?’ and Roman said ‘I am’. Apparently it’s that easy to get a Universal Title match at WrestleMania. Some of the guys in the back must have been kicking themselves that they didn’t get there first.
But the road to 'Mania only got more muddled from there as the global pandemic sent the world into chaos. Reigns made the wise decision to pull out of the show in order to protect himself and his family. News of this decision was widespread, yet WWE still decided to promote the Reigns vs. Goldberg match in the weeks leading up to the show.
Triple H insisted that they had a plan to remove Roman from the match ‘in a unique manner’, which turned out to be Michael Cole mentioning over a match graphic that Braun Strowman will now be challenging Goldberg at WrestleMania.
Strowman won the match to capture the Universal Championship, mainly because WrestleMania was Goldberg’s last scheduled appearance for the company and they needed to get the belt off him. What a mess.
