10 Biggest WWE Missed Opportunities In SummerSlam History

9. DX Defeats The Legacy In 2009

Triple H had spent some time in 2009 feuding with his former Evolution protegee, Randy Orton. The Viper had matured and truly come into his own as a main event star and working with The Game only helped elevate him in the company. By the time Orton had recruited his own faction in The Legacy, Hunter was attempting to play catch up. Despite what Triple H did, he could not overcome the odds he was faced with against three men. The Game was good but at the end of the day, he was just not good enough. He needed backup and he needed it in the worst way. Enter Shawn Michaels, who had not been seen on WWE TV for nearly four months at the time. Triple H convinced his best friend to come back to the fray and that meant working together to best Randy Orton's young tag team. At 2009's SummerSlam, that is exactly what they did. In a match that was considered by many to have stolen the show, the reunited Degeneration-X defeated Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes. The loss reaffirmed DX's position in the company and proved once again that younger talents are often no match for established veterans in WWE. However, this was a missed opportunity because the company could have done the unexpected. Fans likely knew that DX would not come back together to just lose, so they perhaps did not take The Legacy seriously. Rhodes and Dibiase would have been flying under the radar and a win at SummerSlam would very much have been a surprise. DX would have recovered by the next night, as one loss surely would have had no effect on them. For Legacy though, a win over WWE's legendary duo would have catapulted them even higher than before.
