Only in MMA does an athlete get told “you’re fine!” as he is helped to his feet, blood pouring from his face. Those were the reassuring words of Chris Lytle’s cornerman following a savage second-round thrashing at the hands (and elbows) of Josh Koscheck.

Lytle had lost two prior UFC fights due to cut stoppages and was certainly no stranger to absorbing levels of punishment that would break many fighters.

That toughness was certainly tested in this welterweight scrap as Koscheck took Lytle down repeatedly and hammered away with vicious ground-and-pound, chiselling two huge cuts above his right eye in the process.

Pinned against the fence with no escape, ‘Lights Out’ fought gamely to protect himself but took a fierce beating as evidenced by the sight of his blood being splattered all over a cageside TV camera.

Unable to counter Koscheck’s oppressive ground game, Lytle walked away with a lopsided decision loss and a significant plasma deficiency.
