A list of bloodiest fights is not complete without a Diego Sanchez entry.

‘The Nightmare’ has built a career on displays of extraordinary resolve, but if you ever doubted the size of his heart, well, it pumped an obscene amount of blood all over the cage during this grisly bloodbath.

Martin Kampmann’s vastly superior striking didn’t deter Sanchez as he charged forward winging speculative punches but was frequently on the receiving end of crisp counters from ‘The Hitman’; the cumulative effect of which was Sanchez’s face being turned into mush.

The Albuquerque native was soon bleeding liberally from his mouth and nose, while his eyes were swelling shut. Sanchez has an unfathomable tolerance for pain, however, and continued to press forward in an attempt to overwhelm Kampmann with relentless pressure. Indeed, Sanchez got his own licks in, wobbling the Dane and opening up an assortment of cuts around his eyes.

As the gripping contest drew to a close, Kampmann landed a stiff right hand that busted Sanchez wide open under his left eye. Bearing a striking resemblance to Sloth from The Goonies, a crimson-masked Sanchez continued to stalk Kampmann around the cage in a zombified state.

Sanchez’s penchant for punishment is both a blessing and a curse. It’s helped him win fights and fans, but at the cost of absorbing sickening levels of abuse. He endured a terrible beating here but refused to quit and somehow snatched a controversial decision victory.
