A war, a real war. WWE ladder matches have long since ceased to be captivating affairs, much like the majority of the product. Everything is overly-choreographed, and each match follows such a similar story that it is difficult for any of them to stand out.

Not this one, oh no. Luke Harper defended his freshly-won WWE Intercontinental Championship against Dolph Ziggler at the 2014 WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders, Chairs and Stairs event, a show notable for that ill-advised attempt to shoehorn stairs into the whole shebang.

Notable for stairs and for this classic, that is. Harper and Ziggler went full throttle from the start, throwing everything and themselves at each other in an attempt to retrieve a championship that both men needed, albeit for very different reasons. They pulled out all the stops, Harper coming dangerously close to breaking his arm in a particularly violent spot, a suicide dive into a ladder that somehow left his limb precariously stuck within the rungs of the weapon.

Ziggler came out on top that night in Cleveland, bringing Harper's reign to a depressingly quick end. Brodie Lee didn't have many opportunities to shine as a singles star in WWE, but this still stands up today as a thrillingly brutal ladder match.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
