We've already seen how Edge's death-defying nature helped him escape the midcard tag division and establish himself as a singles star. His rise to the top was littered with challenges against various gatekeepers, proving to both the WWE top brass and the fans that he had the quality and toughness to be a legitimate main-eventer. The most arduous of such matches was his no disqualification bout against Mick Foley at WrestleMania 22. The tone for the match was set early on when Edge hit his signature spear on Mick, only to recoil immediately, more hurt by the move himself. Foley tore off his outer layer of clothing to reveal a protective belt of barbed wire. This was clearly going to be no walk in the park. In the end it took something extraordinary for Edge to put away the hardcore legend. Having taken Foley to the brink of defeat, the final blow came as a table was set up on the outside. The Rated R Superstar appeared to be setting up for a spear through the ropes, a daring spot in any circumstances. The stakes were actually much, much higher. In a move rarely seen outside of the glory days of ECW, Edge's girlfriend Lita took out a lighter and set the table ablaze. The crowd roared with disbelief. Although being forcefully driven through a piece of flaming wood is nobody's idea of a good time, Foley arguably had the easier role in the bump. Edge was faced with a headfirst dive into the flames - a move he pulled off with only the briefest moment's hesitation. He deservedly picked up the pinfall and continued his march to the top of the card, but departed the Allstate Arena with a haunted look (and a great deal of blood) in his eyes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2rkQ12G5DU
