At the 2000 King Of The Ring, Kurt Angle capped off a memorable first eight months in the WWF by winning the tournament. On the same card, Gerald Brisco and Pat Patterson stumbled around in lingerie to contest the WWF Hardcore Title. On commentary, Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler seemed as incredulous as everyone else.
Depicted as 'stooges' to Vince McMahon, Patterson and Brisco were simple comedy characters. Often, this kind of thing worked well, but the 'Evening Gown' scenario was perhaps a little far. Imagine watching the event when a non-wrestling fan entered the room? There would be no explanation good enough to explain what was going on.
Telling the horrified non-fan why Patterson and Brisco were even in the ring would be challenge enough, but justifying why they were in stockings? Nigh-on impossible.
