It might feel like this was just a random episode of Raw with a match between two great wrestlers, but it was a little more than that.

A week earlier, WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena had chosen his opponent for SummerSlam: Daniel Bryan. On this episode, GM Brad Maddox said people were doubting whether Bryan actually deserved the spot, so he put him in a series of matches to show the fans that the challenger had earned the opportunity.

After dispatching with Jack Swagger, Bryan’s next opponent was Swagger’s Real American teammate, Antonio Cesaro. The two had a 20-minute battle that was certainly PPV-worthy. They traded offense nonstop, barely slowing down. A highlight had to be Cesaro unloading a seemingly endless supply of European uppercuts on Bryan, just a perfect example of how hard-hitting the match was.

Bryan triumphed in this match, but he had a third opponent, Ryback. That match didn’t go quite as well for D-Bry, as he won via DQ.
