10 Defining Matches That Make People Hate John Cena

9. John Cena vs. Kurt Angle - Survivor Series 2005

2005 was the real year where Cena's popularity really began to go downhill, and as his arrogant rapper gimmick subsided, so did the respect from WWE fans. He was the darling of SmackDown at a time when wrestlers only competed on one brand, but his switch to Raw - a show where the fans were much more vocal in their dislike for people - saw things turn on their head in terms of his popularity. Raw GM Eric Bischoff immediately deemed Cena as an unfit WWE Champion, and tried his hardest to handpick stars to wrestle the title away from Cena. One of those was Kurt Angle who, despite being a heel at the time, was without doubt the fans choice to win the belt. Angle came up short on a couple of occasions prior to this match at Survivor Series, but it was this evening in particular where things turned nasty. Angle was loved by WWE fans, and with Cena's gimmick wearing thin, the crowd were massively vocal against Cena. Given how Cena had caused Chris Jericho to lose his job prior to this feud (more on that next), his heat levels just got bigger and bigger throughout the second half of 2005. When he pinned Angle yet again at Survivor Series, the fans had given up on John Cena.
