10 Defining Matches That Make People Hate John Cena

10. John Cena vs. Chris Jericho (You're Fired Match) - Raw, August 22 2005

All the unpopularity Cena has picked up from WWE fans began at a certain point in his career, and the first real occurrence of it was August 2005. He had arrived in the WWE with a fresh, innovative gimmick that started off really well. As an arrogant rapper who earned the respect of his peers by wrestling in some decent matches, he had found his place in the company nicely. Cena was feuding with Chris Jericho in mid-2005 - with Jericho working as a heel. However, the crowd were incredibly torn over who they wanted to come out on top - despite there being a clear face vs. heel feud playing out. Jericho's performance at SummerSlam got more people in his corner - he completely outperformed Cena with an incredible showing on pay-per-view. With Eric Bischoff keen to get rid of Cena as WWE Champion, he created a You're Fired rematch for the following night on Raw, with the loser leaving the company. The crowd were so hot for Jericho it was unreal; and it was the first real match that saw the babyface Cena gain a whole host of heat. Jericho had become a real fan favourite in the WWE by that point - regardless of him working as a heel - and the prospect of him leaving the WWE was unthinkable to the fans. When Cena nailed the win, his heat levels went through the roof. The crowd were totally split at the beginning of this feud - by the end of it, he had become one of the most hated guys on the entire roster.
