10 Dream Wrestling Matches That Were Huge Disappointments
3. Sting vs Hollywood Hogan - Starrcade '97
When Hulk Hogan defected to the NWO, he wasn't the only WCW star who went through a dire transformation. After a fake version of Sting appeared with the New World Order, many of Sting's allies and friends assumed it was him. Feeling betrayed by his former friends, Sting left the ring for more than a year as he turned into a mysterious watcher akin to Brandon Lee's character from 1994's The Crow. At first he just let events play out, but he eventually issued a challenge to Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at Starrcade. Considering the build-up and planning was perfect to the detail, the match itself was a disaster. After all the NWO shenanigans and trickery affecting matches in the past, this was the one instance when the audience just wanted a clean finish, a clear win by the hero over the villain. After his signature leg drop, Hogan pinned Sting. Bret Hart then came out and restarted the match with himself as the referee, claiming he wasn't going to let another person be screwed like he was - a reference to the Montreal Screwjob. Sting then put the Scorpion Deathlock on Hogan, consequently winning the match. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Wr6N2lpQY8 The thing is, referee Nick Patrick had botched the fast count and counted normally, meaning Hart's interference made no sense. Because of this, WCW reversed the title change the very next night. The fans had waited for over a year for a final conclusion to the Hogan/Sting saga, but all they got was an over-booked mess.
