Rescuing his real-life wife Sable from the eventual King of Kings at WrestleMania XII, Marc Mero quickly became a prominent figure on WWE programming in the immediate aftermath of the Show of Shows. Before long, he was thrown into an Intercontinental Championship tournament, and he only went and won the whole thing, knocking off none other than 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, Farooq, and Owen Hart to come out with the gold.

The stars appeared to be aligning for the former Johnny B. Badd, with Mero successfully defending the title against Goldust at In Your House 10. However, one night later, the rug was suddenly pulled from under his feet as his old sparring partner Hunter Heart Helmsley wrestled the beautiful belt away from him on Raw.

Things were never the same for Mero after this shocking usurping. The next few months would see him slowly slip down the card before a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury cost him six months of his WWE career.
